Johnston Heights Secondary is a large school of about 1400 students located in Surrey, British Columbia. Our student population is very diverse which enables us to enjoy a very rich learning environment. We have recently been authorized as an IB school and as a result, we are the largest school with a Middle Years IB Program in the BC. The IB program believes in action and service as integral parts of the program. (IBO, 2017) This project will enable students to take action by applying their learning in making a positive impact on the lives of people in the Johnston Heights community.

Here is a bit of information about our Synergy Project....

Project Focus: Johnston Heights Heritage and Identity
Project Title: Finding your Place in our Community

Summary/vision:
The vision is for grade 8 students to explore the heritage and history of Johnston Heights Secondary and its community as well as to understand the area and school as they presently exist in order to find their sense of place in the school and local community. In doing so, the goal is to give students a context in which they will create a vision for their own contributions to the community as they continue on as Johnston Heights students and future citizens of the community. The Human Geography 11 students will serve as mentors to these students and help guide them in their community explorations. The final product will be a video compilation of student learning that will document the history and evolution of Johnston Heights Secondary and its surrounding community.

Description of project program/class/participants:
This project will involve all students in a Grade 8 pod (pod to be determined) and their teachers as well as the Human Geography 11 students and their teacher. As Johnston Heights has a model of full inclusion where all students participate in the regular classroom environment, differentiation to meet the needs of all learners occurs as needed.
It will also involve collaboration with the teacher-librarian and the MYP IB coordinator.
Johnston Heights Secondary is an IB world school. T

Project Goals:
·         To have students explore and understand their school history and local community.
·         To have students create a stronger connection with their school and local community.
·         To have students establish a sense of place and to develop their sense of belonging and identity within their school and local community.
