Digital Citenzship and the Learner Profile
“What aspects of
Digital Citizenship have we incorporated or will incorporate into our project?”
Geography 11/12
Our Geography class has been working with ARC GIS
software to research and collate the local community places that our grade 8’s
will be exploring in the new year as they pick up the project from the senior
students. Sarah Mcskimming has been working with her class in learning this new
software. While working with it she has been teaching them about different
aspects of digital citizenship. The class has explored digital communication
and learned about how to communicate messages effectively in a digital
environment. Because it will be their work that mentors the grade 8 students
and not the students themselves, the information they present must be clear and
easy to follow. The students have also been increasing their digital literacy
by learning how to use the ARC GIS software. Coupled with this learning, Sarah
has discussed digital etiquette and responsibility in using this software and
the information that is presented via this tool. They have considered the
audience for which this information is intended and the purpose for this
information.
Grade 8 Students
Our Community Service coordinators have been working weekly with
our grade 8 pods to explore the 10 Learner Profile Attributes as part of our IB
program in order for them to develop a sense of the expectations we have for
them as members of our JH community.
In all of the lessons that students have experienced the
overarching questions are “What does it mean to be… (principled, knowledgeable,
etc.)? and “What behaviors show that someone is…(principled, knowledgeable,
etc.)? The exploration and discussion of these questions include digital
citizenship each time. Exploring these attributes and identifying behaviors
that demonstrate them will enable students to develop their role as a student
in our school community. This will be the lens and framework from which they
will move into the research and creation phases of this SET-BC project in the New
Year.
